Extracurricular Activities

Westside Catholic supports and encourages extracurricular activities. This page contains information regarding programs offered at Westside Catholic.

Academic Activities

Spell Bowl - The Spell Bowl team is made up of fifteen 5th and 6th graders. They practice together in preparation for the Academic Competition for Excellence Spell Bowl held in November each year. Eight of the 15 students compete and each writes - correctly, we hope - seven words. Answers are scored immediately and points listed. Awards are given at the end of the competition. You don't have to be an "A" speller to be in the Spell Bowl, but you have to be willing to work hard, study a lot and come to practices.

Quiz Bowl - Students in 5th and 6th grade are invited to participate in the Indiana Thinking Cap Bowl. This is a computer contest of "100 outstanding, thought-provoking, multiple-choice questions" on history, spelling, math, science, English, current events, children's literature, government, Indiana, general information, and trivia". We want the Quiz Bowl to be fun but it is also a state contest. All participants must be willing to follow the directions and work during the competition.

Math Bowl - The Math Bowl team is made up of up to 16 5th and 6th graders. They practice together to compete in the Academic Competition for Excellence Math Bowl held in March each year. The competition consists of 4 rounds of 7 questions in which the students figure out and choose the correct answer from a list of 4 choices. The answers are scored immediately and points are posted. To be in the Math Bowl you must be willing to work hard, study a lot, and come to practices.

Speech - The speech team is made up of 6th, 7th and 8th graders interested in developing their speaking talents. This year (2004) the team is coached by head coach Kris Schroeder and assistant coach Barb Rodenberg. There are four meets: October 12th, October 28th, November 4th, and November 9th. Students can compete in the following categories: dramatic and humorous prose, dramatic and humorous duo, dramatic, humorous, oratorical interpretation, impromptu, extemporaneous, poetry, and original oratory. Practice is every Tues and Thurs after school until 3:30. Also a special thanks to the following people for volunteering to be our speech judges: Karen Alstadt, Bridget Phaffman, Mary Scheller, Shannon Schentrup, Rita Shane, Carol Nurrenbern, Holly Will, Janet Ellert, Toni Solis, Sharry Thompson, Barb Rodenberg, and Joan Frazer.

Art Committee - The Art Committee is open to students in Grades 5 - 8 at Westside Catholic School. During its meetings, students do a variety of activities including art service projects for the community, grant projects, and create artwork in various media. Currently students in grades 7 & 8 are participating in a series of Art Career Studies and explorations. Meetings are held in the St. Boniface Art Room on Wednesdays from 2:45 to 4:00 unless listed otherwise.

Community Activities

Student Council - Each class in grades 5-8 are represented in Student Council at Westside Catholic's St. Boniface campus. Two students from each homeroom represent their peers. Student Council is involved in many community projects -- ranging from helping to preserve the Howell Wetlands to providing Christmas for families from Catholic Charities.

Student Council also sponsors "spirit days" throughout the school year. They have sponsored "blue and gold day", "twin day", and a "role reversal day" where students dressed like teachers and visa versa, just to mention a few.

Student Council raises money by selling candy after school during the year. Those funds are used to help out where ever they are needed. For example, the organization has bought a new scanner for the computer lab at St. Boniface and a digital camera for all the campuses to use.

Student Council members have meetings at least once monthly and those meetings are run according to Robert's Rules of Order. Officers are voted on by other members -- the only stipulation being that there president must be an 8th grader. Student Council members are expected to be role models for the other students.

Parkview Nursing Home - Students volunteer at Parkview one (or two) afternoons a week. While they are there they interact with the residents, help with the animals, decorate, talk and listen. We have been participating in the program for the last 3 years. In August 2001 the Parkview Art program will begin making lap robes for he residents at Parkview. These lap robes will be hand painted and sewn. Some, if not most of the sewing will be done by the Home Economics classes.

Respect Life - Our group is an organization that allows students in grades five through eight to be involved in their community year round. We provide, through monthly meetings, the opportunities for students to assist in the planning of volunteer activities that show respect for life. Some past projects that the students have done include: collecting shoes for the needy in Appalachia, putting up crosses, providing food baskets for families during the Thanksgiving season, and purchasing a dresser and filling it with items for the Birthright Center. These are only a few of the many projects the students have been involved with over the past years.

Scouting - Girl Scouts: There are Girl Scout troops for all ages of girls interested in joining! Anyone who would like more information on a Girl Scouting may contact Pat Funke at (812) 425-5080.

Boy Scouting: The Boy Scouts are active at Westside Catholic School and available for all ages.
